Position Summary

The Investment Analyst will work closely to support the investment team with due diligence on investments, including data analysis, quarterly reporting, and impact and portfolio management. Your role will involve contributing to investment and impact reporting, all while supporting the team's overall goals and initiatives as we make progress towards our goals of building a 100% impact investment portfolio and implementing our Net Zero Carbon Action Plan.

Core Responsibilities

Portfolio Management and Due Diligence

  • Assists in all aspects of investment sourcing, research, due diligence and completion of investment transactions.
  • Manages a portfolio of investments, including building and maintaining relationships with portfolio fund managers, and monitoring and evaluating financial and impact performance of investments.
  • Assists the Investment Director and Chief Investment Officer in preparing the operating budget.
  • Reviews management fee invoices, expense reports and payables.
  • Oversees operational transactions, account balances and correspondence for a portfolio of investments

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Monitors and provides oversight of the Foundation’s impact investing practices and investment portfolio.
  • Support the Investment Team in further developing and delivering its approach to impact reporting across several internal and external stakeholders (incl. Board, external audiences) and products (McConnell’s Annual Report, McConnell’s Impact Report annual carbon emissions assessment, and annual UNPRI reporting).
  • Assists in the preparation, and presentation of, quarterly investment reports for the Impact Advisory Committee (IAC), the Investment Committee (IC), and the Board.

Crosscutting Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with all members of the investment team to drive optimum impact and effectiveness.
  • Contribute to supporting the growth of impact investing within the philanthropic sector and Canada through engagement by liaising with external partners and stakeholders.
  • Develops and recommends enhancements to investment portfolio performance measurement from both financial and impact perspectives.
  • Assists with compliance and supports in preparing for the annual audit, regulatory filings and investment accounting.

Position requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as finance or sustainable investing.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience within the sustainable finance or impact investing field.
  • Relevant postgraduate level education or professional credentials (MBA, CFA, CPA) is an asset.
  • Familiarity and experience completing due diligence and executing investment transactions across public and/or private investment asset classes.
  • Proficiency in Excel, encompassing modeling, charting, and data analysis and visualization.
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Functional bilingualism (B2 on the global scale in both languages).
  • Demonstrated commitment to positive societal and environmental change.
  • Demonstrates commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

  • Interest in due diligence, impact management and portfolio construction in Canada and/or international markets.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work autonomously, while informing and engaging colleagues as needed.
  • Possesses analytical skills, accountability, strong organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and a self-starter mindset.
  • Fluent in articulating investment and impact investing concepts in a written format.
